Benzoyl peroxide is one of the main ingredients used in literally hundreds of prescription and over the counter acne treatments for two reasons, it is cheap and it works. It quickly works as an antibacterial, killing the bacteria, but not actually shrinking the pores or exfoliating. It comes with various side effects such as itchiness, dryness, redness, and severe irritation for some. In and of itself, it does not have many of the factors required for serious acne treatment. In addition, many have reported that due to its elements, you become dependent on it for years to come. It essentially clears out the pores in such a way that should you stop treating it at any time, it leaves open gaps and a great environment for bacteria to quickly grow and regenerate itself. It may be proven. But for all intensive purposes, we would not suggest benzoyl peroxide to treat any kind of acne, let alone blackheads.
